Oxidized Silver

Oxidized Antique Silver Finish

Antique-blackened patina applied selectively to bring out detail and depth — popular for men’s, boho, and gothic-aesthetic jewelry lines.

In Short

Oxidation darkens 925 sterling silver to a deep grey-black antique patina, then is selectively polished off the high points to leave dark color only in the recesses — dramatically increasing visual depth and pulling out fine carved detail.

How Oxidation Works

The finished silver piece is briefly submerged in a controlled sulfur solution that reacts with the silver surface to form silver sulfide — the same darkening that occurs naturally over time, accelerated and controlled.

The artisan then uses a polishing wheel to remove the oxidation from raised areas (returning them to high-polish silver) while leaving the dark patina in carved recesses. The contrast brings out detail that would otherwise be invisible on polished silver.

Where Oxidation Works Best

Oxidation is a key technique in our men’s jewelry collection, boho line, gothic-aesthetic designs, and any piece with deeply-carved relief detail (filigree, granulation, engraved patterns). Pairs especially well with black onyx and labradorite for total dark-aesthetic pieces.
