Granulation Technique

Granulation: Bali’s Ancient Sphere Art

Tiny silver spheres arranged in geometric and floral patterns — a Balinese specialty dating back centuries, applied to 925 sterling silver jewelry.

In Short

Granulation is the art of decorating silver jewelry with tiny round granules of pure silver, fused to the base piece without solder. It is one of the oldest jewelry techniques in the world — and a Celuk Village specialty.

How Granulation Works

The artisan first makes hundreds of tiny silver spheres (typically 0.5–1.5 mm in diameter) by melting precisely-measured silver droplets in charcoal until surface tension forms perfect spheres. These granules are then carefully placed onto the base piece in a planned pattern.

Heating the assembly to just below the melting point of silver causes the granules to fuse to the base without solder — a process called eutectic fusion, the same technique used by Etruscan goldsmiths 2,500 years ago.

Granulation in the Catalog

Granulation pieces appear most often in pendants, earrings, and statement rings — categories where the sculptural texture reads strongly. Granulation also pairs well with filigree (textured granule clusters within filigree wire frames) and oxidized finishes (the dark oxidation makes the silver granules pop visually).
