Celuk Village: The Beating Heart of Balinese Silversmithing

Six centuries of silver craft heritage, 4,000+ residents, over 1,000 active silversmiths — the village where every Bali Silver Export piece is made.

In Short

Celuk Village is a small artisan community in Sukawati, Gianyar Regency, Bali — about 25 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport — where almost every household has been involved in silver craftsmanship for generations.

A Six-Century Tradition

Celuk’s silversmithing tradition extends back over six centuries to the era of the ancient Balinese kingdoms, when royal patronage supported the development of sophisticated metalworking techniques for ceremonial objects, temple decorations, and royal jewelry.

Over time, these temple and royal techniques migrated into everyday jewelry production — and the entire village organized itself around silver craft. By the early 20th century, Celuk had become the recognized silver hub of Bali.

A Whole Community of Specialists

What makes Celuk unique is not just that it makes silver — many villages do that — but that the entire community is organized around silver craftsmanship as a coordinated industry. Different households and workshops specialize in different stages: wax carving, casting, hand-finishing, filigree, granulation, stone-setting, and final polishing.

A single complex piece may pass through five or six different artisans, each contributing their particular expertise — and this specialization is what allows Celuk to produce intricate work at scale.
